Tokyo, Japan — Japan Airlines and Japan Transocean Air have requested approval for higher fuel surcharges on international tickets purchased in Japan from 1 November to 31 December 2026.
For travel originating in Japan, the proposed charge for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Oceania is ¥62,000 per person for each flight segment to or from Japan, up from ¥50,000. That is a ¥12,000, or 24%, increase, separate from the base fare.
Subsidy cushions the increase
The airlines’ 15 October announcement says government support reduces the calculated surcharge from Zone T to Zone S. Without that adjustment, the long-haul reference figure would be ¥65,000. The proposed charge remains above the current level.
Ticket date matters
The November–December window concerns ticket issuance, not departure dates. JAL’s published policy says unchanged tickets are not retrospectively adjusted; unused tickets that are changed are reassessed.
The planned rates remain subject to government approval. Passengers should check the applicable charge for their route and ticket conditions.
